It was a night of upsets & shocks this past Saturday in Williamstown, NJ when OPW presented our final event of 2016. A streak ended, a new champion was crowned, & our 4th anniversary show began to take shape! If you can't wait for the DVD, read on for results! 1. Tony Deppen defeated "Too Hot" Steve Scott - It was last year at the 1st MOTM event that Tony Deppen made his OPW debut. From the opening bell, he proved he was on a mission to capture this year's trophy. While it appeared the veteran Scott had Deppen's number a couple of times, a fierce, quick offense from Deppen proved to be insurmountable. 2. Gran Akuma defeated Xavier Cross w/Loudy - Akuma entered this year's MOTM tournament the defending winner as well as boasting a year & a half long win streak on OPW live events. Looking ahead to 2017, Akuma systematically dismantled Cross throughout the contest. Despite Cross' cunning & Loudy's attempts at interference from the ringside area, it wasn't enough to defeat 2015's Master of the Mat. 3. Kyle the Beast defeated Archadia - The high flying Archadia entered MOTM with a game plan; utilizing a high flying offense to take down his adversary. Kyle the Beast, cutting some weight prior to the tournament, had this scouted. The agility & ferocity of the Beast, plus a shift of the crowd in his favor, proved to be successful as he advanced to the semi-finals of MOTM 2. 4. Unbreakable Andy defeated Alex Payne & Drake Chambers - MOTM 2 marked another anniversary in OPW. It was at last year's tournament that Unbreakable Andy debuted in On Point. Standing in the way of this year's trophy were newcomer Drake Chambers & veteran Alex Payne in the only 3 way bout in the tournament. Just as it looked as if Payne would advance to the semi-finals, his associates at ringside decided it would be a good time to present him with his jacket right before a potential pin fall. The mistake cost Payne dearly as Andy advanced in the tournament. After the match, frustration got the best of Payne as he & Pelle Primeau attacked Drake Chambers. Andy returned to the ring to stave off the attack. 5. Tony Deppen defeated Gran Akuma - If there's one constant in wrestling & any other sport, streaks are meant to be broken. In a rematch from last year's semi finals, Tony Deppen found himself facing off with Gran Akuma. Akuma's plan was simple; take out Deppen's legs. And it almost worked. But in the 1st of a couple shockers during the course of the evening, it was Akuma being pinned to the mat for the three count. 6. Unbreakable Andy defeated Kyle the Beast - The OPW faithful were split 50/50 on who they wanted to advance to the finals. In a hard hitting, faced paced match up, both men traded near falls on each other. Kyle the Beast's ferocity was almost enough to break OPW's unbreakable athlete. Despite taking a beating, Unbreakable Andy advanced to the finals...but not without cost and had to be treated backstage. 7. Notorious Inc. defeated the Weapons of Mass Destruction - After being treated to some of the best high flying & mat wrestling in the Masters of the Mat tournament, it was time to get violent in Williamstown. The ring wouldn't contain the action as all 4 men fought around the ringside area & briefly took the match outside on a cold New Jersey night. Chairs & even doors found their way to the ring as weapons. Just when it looked as the WMD's would pick up the win, a low blow from Drew Blood to Matt Tremont was enough to turn the tide in Notorious Inc's favor. After the match, the Bulldozer issued the challenge to Blood for January 7th at our 4 year anniversary show. 8. Tony Deppen defeated Unbreakable Andy to become the 2016 Master of the Mat - Both men have done battle in various promotions throughout the northeast & have found themselves facing each other numerous times in OPW...each having 2 wins over the other. Bruised & beaten, both men had their eyes on the 2016 Masters of the Mat trophy. Both men took their attacks to where each other knew they were the weakest; Andy to Deppen's legs & Deppen to Andy's head. The OPW faithful in attendance voiced their support for both men in a contest that could have gone either way. As badly as both men wanted the trophy & a title shot in January, Deppen appeared to want it a little bit more as he pinned his friend for the 3 count. As Deppen celebrated his win & paid respects to the Unbreakable One, Joey Janela entered the ring to offer his congratulations & inform the crowd that he would not be competing due to no challenger being found. In a move that shocked everyone, Deppen said he didn't want to wait until January. The bravado & perceived disrespect from Janela led to... 9. Tony Deppen defeated Joey Janela to become the NEW OPW Champion - After wrestling 3 matches earlier in the night, Deppen proclaimed he had another in him. Despite being tired & battered, the new Master of the Mat brought whatever fight he had left in him to the Bad Boy. When it looked as if Janela's reign would continue into 2017, everyone was shocked when Tony Deppen mustered whatever strength he had left to surprise Janela for the pin fall & become the new OPW Champion! An irate Janela claimed he had his shoulder up & tried to prove it to anyone who would listen. Footage of what transpired backstage & how it will affect January 7th will be available soon on OPWrestling.com.
